According to the magazine “Popular Mechanics”, researchers at North Carolina State University are in favor of a revolution on our roads for the future. According to them, a fourth color should be added to the traffic lights. The goal ? This would make traffic flow more smoothly on roads where “self-driving” cars drive.
For this, it’s very simple: the colors red, orange and green have the same meaning. Added to these is white, which would mean that a “conventional” car can follow the “autonomous” vehicle driving in front of it.
According to experts, if 10% of cars are autonomous, this would reduce the risk of traffic jams by 3%. They will be 10% lower if one in three people had an “autonomous” car. Nevertheless, the study published in the magazine wants to be realistic: it would indeed be very difficult to replace the traffic lights, which have existed since 1920 and the addition of the color orange.
