A heat pump, much more environmentally friendly than a gas boiler, is not (yet) financially interesting for heating your home today, conclude experts from the Flemish VITO/Energyville research centers in a new study. Sales have almost come to a standstill, according to the sector, Het Nieuwsblad and De Morgen reported on Saturday.
When gas prices peaked last year, installers were unable to procure heat pumps quickly enough to cope with increased demand. But in the meantime, the price of gas has fallen significantly once more. Therefore, from a purely financial point of view, “for buildings with an average or moderate level of insulation, it is not interesting today in terms of operating costs to heat with a heat pump” , estimate the VITO/Energyville experts.
Gas is still relatively cheap and electricity relatively expensive, they explain. The electricity bill indeed includes many other costs. “As long as the ratio between gas and electricity is not correct, you can, so to speak, still offer heat pumps for free, their consumption is too expensive”, explains Maarten De Groote, researcher at VITO, in Het Nieuwsblad.
In the Netherlands, the amortization period for such a device is four to five years, in Belgium it can be up to 15 years.
