Is a drama like that of little Rayan imaginable in Belgium? “One or two holes are formed every year in our house…”

“Wells such as that of the accident of the small Rayan, we do not have any to my knowledge in Belgium”, reacts Benoît Lebeau, technical adviser of Spéléo-Secours, the organization mandated by the Civil Protection in the event of accident at home. “On the other hand, holes can form in the ground because of a natural cavity, or not, below, sometimes following bad weather. They occur in areas near caves or near old mining operations. Ten years ago, we intervened for a resident of Waimes, who had gone to look for wood, and his wife who was looking for him. They had fallen at night into a hole that had formed in their property,” recalls the speleologist. According to him, one or two such holes are formed every year a few meters, even fifteen, deep.
