Difficult to choose a movie on Netflix? We can help you by automatically eliminating “Irish Wish”, online this Friday March 15, from potential candidates. Unless you love cheesy romantic comedies, stringing together clichés like pearls and lacking so much subtlety that you quickly guess how the story is going to end. The presence of Lindsay Lohan, revealed by “Lolita Despite Me”, regularly targets celebrity magazines, 14 million subscribers on Instagram, does not change the situation.
The “Irish Wish” is that of Maddie, a dapper redhead from New York who is madly in love with the writer whose pen she is also the handsome Irishman Paul Kennedy. At the launch party for his new book, Paul becomes infatuated with Maddie’s best friend. The marriage proposal does not take long and off they go for a wedding in the land of sheep, pubs and dizzying cliffs. Maddie is devastated but has to put on a brave face, she is the bride’s best man.
Caricatures
Arriving in Ireland, the day before D-Day, she meets a fairy, while out walking, who offers to grant her the wish of her choice. She doesn’t hesitate long, and without really believing it, decides to take the place of her best friend on Paul’s arm. Fairies have superpowers, it’s well known. The wish is granted. But everything won’t turn out the way Maddie imagined.
Even if we vaguely smile during the heroine’s countless blunders and clumsiness, and fall under the spell of the handsome James, who comes to play spoilsport, this story lacks audacity and surprises. The American women who arrive in this Irish village are caricatures. Just as much as the Irish. And if you absolutely want to opt for a romantic comedy regarding upset and colorful marriages in the British Isles, we would advise you to rewatch “Four Weddings and a Funeral”. A much safer bet.
