The unfortunate news was revealed on her social media accounts in the early hours of Saturday and was confirmed by her agent, who called her “outstanding” adding that she was the epitome of style.

The cause of death is currently unknown. She was last pictured celebrating her leap year on Thursday.

Born in New York in 1921, Iris Apfel was primarily an interior designer and became world famous thanks to a contract she and her husband Carl signed with the White House that covered six presidents.

She married Carl Apfel in 1948. Two years later they founded the textile company Old World Weavers and ran it until their retirement in 1992. Their work included restoration projects for clients such as Greta Garbo and Estée Lauder alongside working with White House. With the couple specializing in fabric from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, they traveled widely, looking for fabrics that might not be obtained in the US. In an interview with the Guardian in 2015, Apfel explained that this was one of the reasons they did not have children. “I don’t believe a child should have a nanny, so that wasn’t what we were going to do,” he said.

Iris Apfel attracted attention through her colorful bohemian style – wearing eye-catching outfits combining haute couture with huge jewellery. Her fame soared in 2005 when the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York hosted a show regarding her called Rara Avis – Latin for “rare bird”.

She was featured regularly in the New York Times, photographed for Vogue magazine, and appeared in advertisements for Coach, MAC Cosmetics, and Kate Spade.

Apfel has amassed more than three million followers on Instagram.

She has also designed a line of accessories and jewelry for the US Home shopping network, collaborated with H&M on a sold-out collection of brightly colored clothing, jewelry and shoes, created a makeup line with Ciaté London, and an eyewear collection with Zenni.

She has also recently starred in campaigns for eBay, Citroën and even created a Barbie doll that looks like her.

Her style was also the subject of a documentary film, Iris, directed by Albert Maysles.

At the age of 91, she became the oldest Dazed magazine cover star and in 2019, on the advice of designer Tommy Hilfiger, she signed a contract with one of the biggest modeling agencies in the world, IMG.

When asked regarding aging in a 2018 interview, Apfel said, “I wouldn’t want to stop the clock. No, that would be so boring. It would be like having you trapped in a time machine, a time warp. I do not like this. I think variety is the spice of life.”
