(i)Reny, an ode to the resilience of women

The committed documentary film highlights the daily struggle of single mothers who are models of resilience and resistance.

The preview of the documentary film (i)Reny retracing the story of four heroines who had their first child very early was screened the day before yesterday at the Canal Olympia Andohatapenaka. Four women, four stories but one thing in common, the film talks about the journey of single mothers who try as best they can to meet the needs of their children.
(i)Reny derives its first meaning from its Malagasy translation “those-there or those-there”, a demonstrative tone even mocking these single mothers. In another sense, the director, Felana Rajaonarivelo evokes that without the prefix “i”: “reny” means mothers. Finoana, a 30-year-old surface technician and laboratory assistant, has two children, including a 7-year-old son and another daughter who would be 12 since she died last year. Nandrianina, a banner also a very young single mother with a 7-year-old son, then Welcome a 19-year-old girl-mother and mother of a 2-year-old girl. And finally Lalatiana, a 26-year-old mother and already mother of two boys aged 9 and 7.
These four heroines have one thing in common, they had their first child very early in their lives. Tortuous and sinuous paths. Lalatiana, the daughter-mother of two boys went through the worst before being able to do an internship at CAT Antsirabe. In her search for work and livelihood, she was even on the streets for two weeks. In the case of Finoana, the film reveals the choice to meet the needs of her child by accepting a job that does not correspond to her study to be a midwife. Having demonstrated tenacity and a very diligent character, she moved from a maintenance agent to a position as a laboratory technician within IMRA. She managed to send her child to a private school. Finoana does not intend to stop there, she plans to find a stable job where she could ensure the future of her child.

Renaissance

The film directed by Felana Rajaonarivelo and whose producer is Canal+ Madagascar and having Fireflies as executive producer. It is about revealing the personal journey of each and their evolution from genesis to redemption. Their social and professional reintegration as well as the well-being of their children motivate them every morning. The film uncovers the environment in which girls who become pregnant at an early age are represented by the stories of these four women. “If the situation of women is quite precarious in general, that of single mothers is even more so. They have to face both difficult daily life and the reproving gaze of society. It is a question of being able to bring a stone to the building on the means of helping these women and their reintegration into society”, indicates Felana Rajaonarivelo.
