The Court of Milan sentenced the former president of the Chamber Irene Pivetti to 4 years in the trial in which she is accused of tax evasion and self-laundering because she allegedly hid from the tax authorities the proceeds of the commercial operation in 2016 for the purchase and immediate resale of three Ferrari Gran cars Turismo and the brand of the Isolani Racing Team. The prosecutor Giovanni Tarzia, head of the investigations of the economic-financial police unit of the GdF, asked for 4 years of imprisonment while the lawyer Filippo Cocco, Pivetti’s lawyer, asked for acquittal. Judges Scalise-Castellabate-Cecchelli of the fourth criminal section of the Court recognized the generic mitigating circumstances in Pivetti by not accepting the request of the prosecutor Tarzia who asked for his exclusion. As additional penalties, the former president of the Chamber and businesswoman received a ban from public office for five years and the inability to negotiate with the public administration for 12 months.
The youngest president of the Chamber, the second woman after Nilde Iotti, in a statement proclaims her innocence and her determination to prove it in the second degree of trial. “It is the sentence requested by the prosecutor, but this is only the end of the first half. We will appeal, now I await the reasons for the sentence because I am really very curious to see how they managed not to take into account the facts we have listed. I am very serene, I am perfectly innocent and we will have the opportunity to clarify this on appeal”, are Pivetti’s words, “it was clear that there could not be an acquittal, I didn’t expect anything different: it’s not that you (journalists, ed.) are here because I’m here, I’m here because you’re here. This process started to create media coverage, but the truth gives me confidence for the second half.”
