Ireland grants Santa Claus permission to fly

Even in these contemplative times, people in Ireland show humor: Ireland’s Prime Minister Leo Varadkar traditionally announced good news in Parliament in Dublin this week: “I confirm that Santa Claus has been given permission to enter Irish airspace.” Santa Claus is allowed to cross national borders on December 24th and December 25th. Varadkar thanked air traffic control, immigration authorities and customs for the necessary exceptions.

In Ireland, people put a burning candle in the window on Christmas Eve: this is meant to symbolize that Mary and Joseph have a place to stay here, but it is also meant to show other travelers the way.

An ice-cold tradition is the Christmas swim in the Atlantic on December 25th. Most people throw themselves into the water for a good cause – and then some drink Irish whiskey punch – which of course contains whiskey, as well as lemon, cloves and a little brown sugar.

The most popular Christmas song in Ireland is reportedly “Fairtytale of New York” (The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl).
