Iraqi Parliament Speaker: The will of the people cannot be overlooked

Al Ittihad (Baghdad)

Yesterday, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi announced his support for the Sadrist movement’s demands to hold early parliamentary elections in the country.
Al-Halbousi said, in a tweet on his Twitter account, that the Iraqi parliament “is the representative of the people and those masses that mobilized are part of his entity and conscience, whose will in early elections can not be neglected, which Muqtada al-Sadr called for.”
He expressed his support for moving forward with holding parliamentary and local elections, within an agreed period of time, to re-start the democratic process under the roof of the constitution and understanding, in line with the country’s supreme national interest.
Last Saturday, Al-Halbousi suspended parliament sessions until further notice, and invited Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi and the political blocs to hold an urgent national meeting, coinciding with the storming of the parliament building and the sit-in by protesters.
