Iraqi Foreign Minister: The entire region is under fire and we are discussing with Washington to stop the Gaza war

Iraq – Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein confirmed that the entire region is under fire, noting that the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip and its continuation has major regional dimensions.

Hussein pointed out that the Gaza war has an impact on the security conditions in Iraq, Yemen and the Red Sea, in addition to the role of Iran and the Gulf states.

He added, “This is why we need continuous communication regarding the security and military situation in the region, in addition to the American role in it, and how to cooperate with Washington to achieve a state of stability in the region.”

He stressed that Iraq is communicating – based on its supreme interest with many countries and peoples – with Washington and Western capitals that influence Tel Aviv’s policy, to press for a permanent ceasefire, and to restore life to Gaza in the first place.

He pointed out that the second stage relates to Palestinian political issues, “and the Palestinians are the ones who should choose their leadership and decide their fate.”

He believed that it is difficult to say that the United States supports genocide in Gaza, citing American statements regarding the ceasefire, sending humanitarian aid, and opening the crossings.

Hussein explained that his current visit to Washington falls within the framework of bilateral relations, and he presented the basic topics in it, which relate to the security and military aspects, the presence of American forces and the international coalition in Iraq, its future and other areas.

He pointed out that the Iraqi internal situation differs from other countries due to the launching of attacks on military bases that include American advisors, adding that this matter is part of the dimensions of the Gaza war, as well as the Iranian-Israeli conflict, and the Iranian-American conflict.

He stressed that there is no American pressure on Iraq because of its position on Gaza or the Palestinian issue, “but the problem is in the attacks on the positions of American advisors in Iraq, which took the form of attacks and counterattacks.”

He explained that “Iraq has strong relations and common interests with America and Iran, our neighbor,” adding, “We have a problem between ally and friend,” stressing that the war on Gaza led to local, regional, and international divisions.

He described the Iraqi government’s position as difficult and embarrassing, pointing out that Baghdad had communicated with the armed factions in order to stop the attacks due to the seriousness of the situation, especially following Washington confirmed that the continuation of the attacks would lead to an American response.

He stated that the attacks and counter-attacks in Iraq have stopped, while the discussion is still ongoing regarding the American presence and the international coalition in Iraq, following the attacks created a problem in Iraqi-American relations.

He added, “Part of our presence in Washington is to restore the problem and relations,” noting that Sudanese Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani will visit the White House soon, before confirming that Baghdad desires normal and healthy relations with Washington and neighboring capitals.
