Iraq.. Turkish drone crashes over Kirkuk

Iraq – The Joint Operations Command of the Iraqi army announced yesterday, Thursday, the formation of a technical working team to investigate the fall of a Turkish drone in Kirkuk Governorate.

A statement by the command, carried by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), stated that “at 9:30 am today, the Iraqi air defense detected a drone within the Kirkuk Operations Command sector. After following it and knowing its path and its arrival at the center of Kirkuk city, which contains government headquarters, important economic centers and vital targets, all security agencies as well as the international coalition forces inquired about the ownership of this aircraft, and it turned out that it was an unknown aircraft.”

According to a responsible source in the Iraqi police, a person was injured after falling at a construction site in central Kirkuk and was taken to the hospital.

The statement added, “At 10:30, the plane was observed crashing inside the city, and it turned out to be a Turkish plane. A technical team was formed from forensic evidence, air defense, and drone crews to determine the causes of the crash and the circumstances of the incident.”

For his part, the deputy commander of the air defense in Kirkuk, Brigadier General Abdul Salam Ramadan, told reporters during a press conference at the site of the plane’s crash: “A Turkish drone that violated Iraqi airspace was shot down.”

He explained that the plane came “from the direction of Sulaymaniyah,” the second largest city in the autonomous Kurdistan region, to the north.

Kirkuk, an oil-rich province, is under federal control in Baghdad, but it is directly adjacent to the Kurdish areas.
