The jihadist organization Islamic State claimed responsibility for yesterday’s attack in northeastern Iraq via a post on Telegram.
Five soldiers were killed and five others wounded in the attack that took place between Diyala and Salahaddin provinces, in an area where jihadist cells still operate. Almost seven years after the Iraqi government declared total victory over the jihadists, the attacks have not stopped.
Iraq’s Ministry of Defense issued a statement expressing its grief over the loss of Colonel Khalid Naji Wasak and soldiers who were subjected to a “terrorist attack”. Iraqi security forces repelled the attack but suffered heavy casualties, the statement said.
