Iran’s president-elect, the reformist Masud Pezeshkianwill take office as president of the country in early August before Parliament, official sources announced on Sunday.
“The swearing-in ceremony of the president will take place on August 4 or 5,” said Mojtaba Yosefi, a member of the parliament’s governing board, the official IRNA news agency reported.
The new president will then have regarding 15 days to propose his ministers to Parliament, which will vote on cabinet posts on a case-by-case basis between the end of August and the end of September.
On Sunday, Iran’s Guardian Council approved the results of the second round of Friday’s presidential elections, in which Pezeshkian defeated ultra-conservative Saeed Jalili.
“The correctness of the results of the second round of the presidential election has been approved by the Guardian Council,” the body’s spokesman, Tahan Nazif, told state television.
Iran’s new president won with 53.6% of the vote
According to official results of the presidential race announced on Saturday, Pezeshkian won 53.6 percent of the vote, compared to ultra-conservative Saeed Jalili’s 44.3 percent.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will then sign the decree approving the election of the president, followed by the inauguration of the president in parliament.
Pezeshkian, a former health minister and 69-year-old parliamentarian, will become the ninth president in the history of the Islamic Republic of Iran, succeeding ultra-conservative Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in May.
During her election campaign, she promised to move closer to the West and to relax the mandatory Islamic veil.
