DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran’s president on Monday appointed a new secretary to the Supreme National Security Council, replacing veteran Ali Shamkhani.
President Ebrahim Raisi’s decree will replace Shamkhani, who had been linked to a recently executed suspected British-Iranian spy. However, Shamkhani also played a role in negotiations with Persian Gulf states to de-escalate tensions with Tehran, which included the announced Iran-Saudi rapprochement agreed in Saudi Arabia.
The new secretary will be Ali Akbar Ahmadian, former director of the strategic center of the Revolutionary Guard, an influential paramilitary group.
The decree, reported by state news agency IRNA, gave no explanation for the change. Shamkhani had been in the job for almost a decade.
