The convict’s lawyer, Maziar Tatati, said his client was arrested in April “for having published a photo without wearing the veil on social networks.”

An Iranian woman received 74 lashes for “attack on public morals» and was ordered to pay a fine for not wearing the Muslim veil, declared the Judicial Authority.

Since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, wearing the veil has been compulsory in Iran for all women, even foreigners, who must hide their hair in public places.

«The convict, Roya Heshamti, encouraged permissiveness (by going out) in a despicable manner in busy places in Tehran“, declared the justice press organ Mizan Online on Saturday evening. “His sentence of 74 lashes was carried out in accordance with the law and Sharia» et «for violating public morals“, added Mizan Online.

The condemned woman’s lawyer, Maziar Tatati, told the reformist newspaper Shargh that his client had been arrested in April “for publishing a photo without wearing the veil on social networks“. In recent months, more and more women have appeared without veils in public places, particularly following the protest movement triggered by the death in detention in September 2022 of Mahsa Amini, arrested for violating the strict dress code.

Mr. Tatati added that Ms. Heshamti had also been fined “for not wearing the Muslim veil in public“. Faced with acts of disobedience on the part of women regarding the wearing of the veil, the authorities tried to toughen up their tone, by announcing more controls, notably using cameras, and by arresting actresses posing without hijab on the social networks.

In September, Parliament voted in favor of a bill that would toughen penalties for people who violate the dress code.
