Iranian Diplomat’s Extradition and Accusations of Torture by Belgium: The Controversy Unveiled

The wife of Iranian diplomat Assadollah Assadi, who was exchanged for ex-convict Olivier Vandecasteele, accuses Belgium of torturing her husband, the Iranian news agency IRNA wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

Just as Belgium accused Iran of conducting a sham trial, Iran believes the same regarding the trial of Assadollah Assadi, convicted in Belgium of terrorism.

In Belgium, where he was imprisoned for 1,789 days, the diplomat would have spent 100 days in a cell actually intended for prisoners suffering from mental deficiencies and would also have been put in solitary confinement for three months, reports IRNA, on the basis of his wife’s words. Still according to the latter, he also spent 28 days naked in a kind of bunker.

The diplomat would also have been mistreated in the German cell where he stayed before being extradited to Belgium, according to his companion. There would have been limited access to drinking water.

For Tehran, the detention of the 50-year-old has always been illegal by definition, because he would benefit from diplomatic immunity.
