Iran wants to use ChatGPT to influence US election

The Iranian Account Network used the chatbot ChatGPT to generate text to influence the U.S. presidential election. ChatGPT developer OpenAI said the profiles had been discovered and removed, but did not mention their number. Therefore, these texts should address both political camps in the United States. However, these manuscripts reportedly reached almost no readers.

For example, they either say Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is under scrutiny or want to be declared king. It also covers the war in Gaza, the Paris Olympics and fashion, the statement said. OpenAI emphasizes that the text generated for submissions to online platforms and fictional articles on websites barely reaches any readers.

ChatGPT can generate human language level text in seconds. There have been concerns for some time that this capability could be misused to cheaply mass-produce and spread misinformation or propaganda.

Recently, many similar behaviors have been discovered. In June, Microsoft discovered that pro-Russian accounts wanted to promote a fake video purportedly showing violence at the Olympics. Hundreds of accounts from Iran, Russia and China were also discovered on Facebook, some of which spread disinformation generated using artificial intelligence software. OpenAI announced in May that accounts from countries such as Russia and China wanted to abuse the company’s artificial intelligence tools for propaganda.
