Iranian authorities on Tuesday announced the launch of a new type of cruise missile named “Abu Mahdi”, which will be used by the armed forces, Spanish private news agency Europapress reported. The missile’s name refers to Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, a deputy commander of Iran-backed militias in Iraq, known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, who was killed in a US drone attack in 2020 .

With a range of a thousand kilometres, the missile can be launched from land, sea or air. “Built by experts and technicians from the Aerospace Industries Organization of Iran’s Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics, the ‘Abu Mahdi’ cruise missile, with a range of over 1,000 kilometers, is capable to destroy targets at sea,” the Iranian news agency Irna said.

With the development of this “high-precision naval cruise missile”, the Islamic Republic of Iran is significantly increasing its military arsenal.

The “Abu Mahdi” missile uses artificial intelligence in programs related to the design of the missile’s flight path in the command and control system. The missile flies low to avoid radars and can change its flight height when there are geographical obstacles or radars.
