Iran and the signatories to the 2015 nuclear deal have maintained the exchange of messages through different channels, although there have been no formal talks.

The IRNA news agency quoted Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, as saying this at a weekly press conference on January 23. The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy Josep Borrell “still interacts with the signatories of the agreement, including Iran and the United States,” Kanaani said.

He said Tehran was working on the nuclear issue and sought to lift US sanctions within diplomatic frameworks.

While excluding the possibility of direct dialogue between Iranian and US officials, Mr. Kanaani stressed that Tehran will wait and see what the remaining parties will do in practice and cooperate in a constructive spirit until the end. what level.

The 2015 nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was signed by Iran and the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (including the United States, Britain, France, China and the United Nations). Russia) and Germany signed in July 2015, under which Tehran limited its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

However, in 2018, the US withdrew from the agreement and re-imposed economic sanctions, leading to Iran reducing its commitments in the agreement.

Negotiations aimed at restoring JCPOA started in April 2021 in Vienna (Austria), but has not achieved any breakthrough. The most recent round of negotiations took place in August 2022.
