Iran presented its greatest technological advance, but in reality it was a development kit that cost 10,000 pesos on Amazon

During the last years the interest and development of quantum computers has been increasing, mainly due to their capabilities to perform complex calculations and operations faster than conventional equipment, which is generating a greater degree of attention on its evolution.

In this context, the Iranian government gave an important announcement: the development of the smallest quantum computer in the world. However, there was a key problem, since it was a lie, since instead of being a quantum computer, it was a development kit…which can be purchased through Amazon.

Development kits are teams looking for emulate the behavior of a computer or smartphonewhich is used by application developers to test their programs.

However, in accordance with the place PC Gamerthe centimeter-long “quantum processor” with a radial circuit diagram, displayed by the Iman Khomeini University of Marine Sciences and Technologies, where Iranian Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari was also present, was “too basic” to have that processing capacity.

The truth regarding the “quantum computer”

Multiple experts expressed their doubts regarding the new “iran technological revolution“, so Gabriel Noronha, former US State Department adviser on Iran, undertook to clarify what happened was regarding a widely available board through the online store.

You too can get this ‘quantum processor’ for the low price of $589 on Amazon

The board in question is the ZedBoard Zynq-7000 development SOC, originally priced at $589 (regarding 10,000 pesos at the current exchange rate), although while it was still in existence it reached 932 (the equivalent of almost 16,000 pesos), which does not even come close to the necessary specifications for quantum computing, with 256 GB of storage, 512 MB of DDR3 RAM, plus a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor.

Despite not being a component designed for quantum computing, the Zynq-7000 is designed for other types of tasks, like video processingsoftware acceleration, motor control, Linux/Android/RTOS development, embedded ARM processing, and other prototyping.

This is not the first time that Iran has presented “innovative” devices which turn out to be false. For example, in April 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, they claimed to have developed equipment capable of detect people infected with coronavirus within a range of 100 meters, with a reliability of approximately 80%.
