The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, discussed, Thursday, with the Supreme Leader of the Revolution in Iran, Ali Khamenei, bilateral relations and regional and international issues.
This came during a meeting held by Al-Thani with Khamenei at the Rahbari shrine in the Iranian capital, Tehran, according to a statement by the Qatari Emiri Diwan.
The statement stated that during the meeting, “the existing friendship relations between the two countries were reviewed and a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest were discussed.”
Earlier today, the Emir of Qatar and Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi discussed bilateral relations in the fields of politics, economy and trade, and enhancing prospects for cooperation in the tourism, investment, transport and communications sectors.
This came during a session of talks between them in Tehran, which Al-Thani arrived earlier Thursday, according to a statement by the Amiri Diwan.
The visit of the Emir of Qatar comes following the Iranian President’s visit to Doha last February, in light of historical relations between the two countries, in contrast to Tehran’s “strained” relations with some Gulf capitals.
At that time, the two countries signed 14 cooperation documents in the fields of aviation, trade, maritime, media, foreign policy, energy, metrology, culture and education.
Doha and Tehran have distinguished historical relations, as Iran was one of the first countries to recognize Qatar’s independence (in 1971), and the first Iranian ambassador presented his credentials to the Emir of Qatar in 1972, while Iran’s first Qatari ambassador arrived in 1973.
After his meetings in Tehran, Al-Thani left Iran, “heading to the sisterly Republic of Turkey on a working visit,” according to a statement by the Amiri Diwan.
