Iran: Due to US visa delays, Tehran will not attend the UN meeting on the Gaza Strip

Amir-Abdollahian was due to attend a UN Security Council meeting in New York to discuss the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

“The Americans issued visas to me and all my companions in 1 hour. at night (Tuesday at 11:30 p.m. Lithuanian time),” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

He added that due to delays in issuing visas, the Iranian delegation could not attend the meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. 30 minutes Greenwich (4:30 p.m. Lithuanian) time.

H. Amir-Abdollahian indicated that, despite his absence, Tehran will make every effort to extend the humanitarian ceasefire agreement in the Palestinian enclave.

Hamas is expected to release a sixth group of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners on Wednesday.

Tehran-backed Hamas wants to extend an agreed six-day ceasefire by another four days, a source close to the militant group said on Wednesday.

Basically, the US must admit foreign diplomats and their delegations to the UN.

However, in the 2020s, Iran accused the US of refusing to issue a visa to then-Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who wanted to visit the UN headquarters.

Tehran and Washington have not maintained formal diplomatic relations since the 1980s.
