Fouad Choukr, the military leader of Hezbollah, was killed on Tuesday evening in an Israeli air raid on a building in the southern suburbs of Beirut, which left six other dead, including five civilians.

“Certain lines” “crossed” by Israel and Hezbollah

In a speech on Thursday, party leader Hassan Nasrallah promised to respond to this “assault” against the Hezbollah stronghold in the Lebanese capital, raising fears of further escalation. Following the strike, “We expect Hezbollah to choose more targets and (strike) the depth (of Israel)”Iran’s representation to the United Nations said on Saturday, quoted by the official IRNA news agency.

Hezbollah, an ally of Palestinian Hamas and backed by Iran, has been exchanging almost daily fire with the Israeli army along the Israeli-Lebanese border since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip on October 7, triggered by the unprecedented attack by the Islamist movement Hamas on Israel. “Hezbollah and the (Israeli) regime had observed certain lines that the attack (on Tuesday evening) crossed”the Iranian representation said.

Now, the Lebanese movement “will not limit its response to military targets”she added. Iran and Hamas have also accused Israel of the assassination on Wednesday in Tehran of the leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement, Ismail Haniyeh, and have promised to retaliate.
