The assailant was arrested by guards at the Imam-Reza Mausoleum in Mashhad. An investigation has been opened to shed light on his identity.
A Shiite cleric was killed and two were injured, one seriously, in a knife attack on Tuesday in Mashhad, the main place of worship in northeastern Iran, the local governor announced on television.
“Stabbed in the yard”
“A man stabbed three Shia clerics with knives, killing one and injuring two others,” said Khorassan-Razavi provincial governor Yaghoub-Ali Nazari. The attacker is in the hands of the security forces, he added.
“The assailant was immediately arrested by the shrine guards,” said a statement carried by the official Irna news agency.
Sea of blood
The same source also specifies that “an investigation has been opened to find out the identity of the attacker”. Amateur videos showed a man lying amid a pool of blood in the courtyard of the Shia shrine.
The Imam-Reza mausoleum is the main place of worship in Iran, where the incident comes on the third day of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.
