The vast majority of young people have a strong respect for sports referees. This is one of the major lessons from the opinion study “Young people and arbitration” carried out by Ipsos for La Poste.

-3⁄4 of young people aged 13 to 25 practice sport on a regular basis (44% in a club or association)

-Sports referees enjoy a good image among young people. It is a little less positive among 16-19 year olds. 72% of 13-25 year olds respond that they have a good image of sports referees. The figure reaches 81% among 13-25 year olds registered in clubs, including 24% with a very good image.

-Referees arouse strong feelings among young people: respect, sympathy, recognition and curiosity. Even stronger respect among the youngest and among those who practice their sport in clubs.

-For almost all young people, the presence of the referee is essential for matches to go well (essential/important for 97% of respondents). A respect and admiration which arouses condemnation of all forms of violence against referees.

-Many young people say they lack self-confidence and consider that the practice of sports refereeing could help them acquire certain essential qualities which they still lack today.

-La Poste’s commitment to supporting and promoting arbitration is known by some young people and unanimously supported. La Poste is seen as promoting sports refereeing throughout France, in professional and amateur settings.

This La Poste / IPSOS study (carried out between June and July 2024 on 1,000 young people constituting a national sample representative of the French population aged 13 to 25) tells us that 2 out of 5 young people would be ready to be tempted by arbitration in a sport that they like. And 97% of them recognize the importance of the referee in the smooth running of matches.

It is therefore essential to meet them, in the clubs, to allow them to better understand the refereeing function and its challenges.

With this in mind and on the sidelines of the Refereeing Days, on Wednesday October 16 at the FC Issy football club, in Issy-les-Moulineaux, practical workshops around Christian Karembeu1998 world football champion, 2000 European champion and sponsor of the Refereeing Days this year, Gaël FickouFrench international in rugby union, Franck SeguelaOlympic vice-champion in 3×3 basketball in Paris 2024, and young members of the club will be put in place: they will all take the whistle to try their hand at refereeing. All under the watchful eye of three international football referees, Alexandra Collin, Audrey Gerbel and Victoria Beyer, who will also lead theoretical workshops.

The actors who can make young people want to follow an arbitration path are mainly club supervisors and educators, the IPSOS study confirms.

Also, last season, La Poste designed a guide to discovering refereeing in collaboration with partner federations (basketball, football, handball and rugby). This support aims to support those who work closest to the field (educators, teaching teams, etc.) for the development and training of future generations of referees. This year, illustrative diagrams have been added to simplify the reading of the sports sheets, which provides a better understanding of the basic rules of each sport and allows for easier application. Distributed to more than 12,000 amateur clubs in 2023, the refereeing discovery guide has been adapted into a digital version for this new season. It is already accessible to all licensees of the four partner sports, i.e. more than 3.7 million people.
