IPL team bought ‘wrong player’ in 2024 auction?

To the Punjab Kings Indian Premier League (IPL) Of Auction The management had to be questioned during the 2018 season as it looked like they had bought the ‘wrong player’.

The 32-year-old IPL franchise The batsman All-rounder Shashank Singh was bought but perhaps not on purpose. When the next player was called, the franchise raised the issue with auctioneer Mallika Sagar but was told that the bid had already been made and could not be changed.

The people behind Punjab Kings felt as if they considered Shashank as another player. However, they are willing to be part of the franchise with the franchisee at a base price of Rs 20 lakh (about £19,000).
When Shashank’s name came up, Preity Zinta made a bid after a quick discussion with her team as no other franchise bid for Shashank. Bidding ended and they were sold.

The IPL team issued a statement saying that it is only a matter of confusion. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the team said: ‘Punjab Kings would like to clarify that Shashank Singh was always on our target list. The confusion arose from having two players with the same name on the roster. We are delighted to have him on board and look forward to seeing him contribute to our success.’

Punjab Kings raised the matter but the auctioneer insisted that the auction was over and the said player had been included in the team roster.

Maybe it was a ‘mini-auction’ that was supposed to pick just 77 players. A major auction with more spots won’t take place before the start of the tournament in 2025, but interest in player selection has not waned.

The auction was a long process and the record fee for a player was broken not once but twice in a row. First, Sunrisers Hyderabad signed Pat Cummins and then Mitchell Starc was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for £2.3 million.

Starc did not participate in the IPL for eight years but after a tough bidding period and became a part of the IPL, the IPL has become more prominent. The IPL has surpassed the Premier League (English football) to become the second largest sports league in the world after the NFL (American football).
