Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners have reportedly approached the English players with an offer of crores of annual contracts. The Times of London reported that the players were offered up to five million pounds in annual income if they ended international cricket. According to the report, the team owners contacted mainly six prominent English players.
All ten franchises in the IPL have already fielded teams in various Twenty20 leagues including West Indies (CPL), South Africa (SA Twenty20) and UAE (Global Twenty20 League). However, the report does not mention the names of the franchises and the details of the players involved. Saudi Arabia has also expressed interest in hosting the world’s richest Twenty20 league.
Various IPL teams have been contacted for this. ‘The IPL franchise owners have contacted six English players, including internationals, and held initial talks. The owners have asked if they are ready to agree to a partnership agreement with them instead of the English Cricket Board and England County’ – The Times London report says.
The number of IPL franchises is to reach a one-year contract with the players. In that case, these players can be released in different leagues. At present, the players who are under contract with the IPL teams are not able to participate in the matches of the national team. The newspaper also reports that there was a similar discussion with the Australian Twenty20 specialist star.
The IPL franchises have offered players five times the annual salary of the English Cricket Board and England County. In the club football model, the initial contract of the players will be with the IPL team. The IPL owners will take the decision to release these players for the national team competition.
