Brazil ∙ Brazil fined Apple $20 million for selling iPhones without chargers. The judge who handed down the fine described it as a ‘discourteous act’ that would prompt consumers to buy another product in excess. Apple has a chance to appeal the case.
The court ruling comes following Brazil’s Ministry of Justice imposed a $2.5 million fine on the charger issue in September. The ministry also banned the sale of US tech company Apple’s iPhone 12 and 13 models without chargers. The civil court in Sao Paulo has awarded a huge fine to Apple on a petition filed by the Brazilian Consumers Association.
As part of reducing electronic waste, Apple has announced that it will stop providing chargers with new phone models from October 2020. However, Judge Karamuru Afonso Francisco pointed out that the consumers had to pay for the charger if they wanted to operate the phone first.
