On March 14, Apple rolled out its latest software update, iOS 15.4, along with iPadOS 15.4, macOS Monterey, watchOS 8.5, 12.3, HomePod Software 15.4, and tvOS 15.4.
iOS 15.4 affects battery life
The main feature of the iOS 15.4 gives users the ability to unlock their phone using Face ID, even with a mask. It’s a great feature for users who don’t have their own Apple Watch, according to GSM Arena.
The iOS 14.5 rollout in 2021 introduced FaceID with a mask for iPhone users who also own an Apple Watch. The new Face ID only works on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 generations, although it’s less secure and slower.
Limited feature availability might be the least of iOS 15.4’s problems, as an increasing number of users are reporting poor battery life on their iPhones following the update.

Users even said that the iPhone 13 Pro Max only lasts half a day. Older iPhones like the iPhone 11 lost 80% of their battery charge in 24 hours with two hours of screen time per hour.
The issue is not universal though and some temporary battery issues are sometimes expected following an update. And iOS 15.4 may not look major, but apparently it includes 39 vulnerability fixes.
Still, the battery drain numbers are high. Some users have speculated that Apple has started using ProMotion’s maximum 120Hz refresh rate more frequently, according to BGR.
It’s possible, but it can’t be the full explanation since only the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone Pro Max have ProMotion, and those aren’t the only iPhone models affected.
Along with battery issues, iOS 15.4 also includes over 100 new emojis from the 14.0 Emoji set. It comes with a new voice option for Siri as well as the ability to give users the offline time and date.
the iOS 15.4 update expected to have EU digital COVID certificate which stores vaccine cards in Apple Wallet. It also has updates for Safari web page translations with support for Chinese and Italian. It comes with improvements to the Podcasts app and more.
Why you need to install iOS 15.4
According to MacRumeurs, iOS 15.4 brings many new features that iPhone users can enjoy. The update will give users the ability to unlock their iPhone while wearing a mask without other hardware like the Apple Watch. Apple warns that Full Face ID is the best option, but Mask Face ID is now available.
Face ID is designed to use the area around the eyes for authentication. It also works with glasses, but it is not compatible with sunglasses, and users need to look at the iPhone to unlock it with a mask.
The update also adds 37 new emojis, 75 skin color additions, and gives a total of 112 new characters. New emojis include greeting face, melting face, face with open eyes and hand over mouth, face with diagonal mouth, face with peeking eye and dotted face, while new emojis include bubbles and biting lips.
For personal automations set up in the Shortcuts app, you can use the new “Notify while running” option which lets you disable notifications for Shortcuts.
You can choose not to be notified when a shortcut activates, which was not possible with previous versions of iOS 15.
