iPhone survives a week at the bottom of a lake in Brasilia

An iPhone was found working after being submerged for days at a depth of 7 meters in Lake Paranoá, in the city of Brasília. The information is from G1.

The device in question was retrieved on the 17th of February by diving instructor Edinho Rocha, who decided to take it back to the shore of the lake and test it. To his surprise, the device turned on as if nothing had happened.

The instructor then decided to post a video on social media to try to find the person who ended up leaving the device behind. The post in question quickly reached 17,000 views, one of which was by Breno Rafael, the owner of the iPhone.

Breno explained that he had jumped out of his kayak days before to (successfully) save a woman who was drowning in the lake. On the spur of the moment, he ended up taking the plunge, iPhone and all.

I was on Lake Paranoá doing a kayak trip when I saw a girl drowning, asking for help. I immediately jumped out of the kayak to help her. I was wearing a vest and with my cell phone. I jumped in to help, managed to get the girl to the shore of the lake.

As soon as he saw the video, Breno immediately got in touch with Edinho, who even joked that, if he really owned the device, only he would be able to unlock it. As expected, the smartphone unlocked instantly.

Apple’s latest devices, such as the iPhones 14/14 Plus and 14 Pro/14 Pro Max, are IP68 certified for water and dust resistance and withstand up to 30 minutes at a maximum depth of 6 meters. The company, however, only covers any damage caused by liquids if you have AppleCare+.

It is unclear what model of Breno’s iPhone is. The images, however, suggest that it is an iPhone XR (IP67) or an iPhone 11 (IP68).
