It’s update day for Apple: its iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch are updating. These are in fact the respective arrivals of iOS 17.1, iPadOS 17.1 as well as watchOS 10.1. It is also an opportunity to deploy features announced by Apple for a long time, but which were not yet available.

During WWDC 2023 last June, but also during its major conference in September, Apple presented iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and watchOS 10, its operating systems for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. New features, new menus and slightly revised design: if the changes are not revolutionary, some are interesting. Unfortunately, some new features already announced were not yet available. Apple is fixing this today in the latest update of its products, while also fixing some bugs.

iOS 17.1 and iPad 17.1: Remote AirDrop

Apple should have released these two updates the day before, but iOS 17.1 and iPadOS 17.1 are officially arriving, following almost a month of beta. There we therefore find AirDrop which can work even when the two devices are not near each other. Apple’s File Transfer can be used remotely, via cellular connection or Wi-Fi.

A long-awaited addition to Apple Music has arrived: favorite songs. Users can now add certain songs, playlists and albums as favorites, to find them in a dedicated folder, instead of creating a playlist. On playlists, Apple Music recommends songs to add to them, as is the case on Spotify.

watchOS 10.1: Double Tap is finally here

Apple Watches are also updated. What was most anticipated was the Double Tap function, now present on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. Note that Double Tap will not arrive on older models. By touching your thumb twice with your index finger (with the hand on which you wear the watch), you can trigger actions. Open a notification, answer a call, pause music, etc. Enough to use the watch even when your other hand is taken.

Starting with Apple Watch Series 7, NameDrop is coming. By bringing an Apple Watch close to an iPhone (running iOS 17), you can share contact information.

The iPhone 12 is entitled to a dedicated change, due to French legislation

Remember last September 12, the same evening of the Apple keynote: the French radio frequency agency had banned the sale of the iPhone 12. Coincidence of the calendar according to the authorities, the latter questioned the flow of specific absorption (DAS) of the smartphone, which would be too high compared to the regulations.

Despite Apple’s defense, the ANFR did not give in: the company had to develop a fix, validated by the agency. This resulted in the removal of body distance detection, which allows the iPhone to adjust its transmission power when it is not held close to the body. The iPhone 12 therefore receives a change in the DAS with iOS 17.1, for French models only. Enough to finally authorize its marketing.
