A Cincinnati, Ohio, family was stunned in the morning following an iPhone 4 ignited overnight and caught fire on the kitchen counter. This smartphone was one of the first released by Apple, being made official in 2010 with advanced specifications for the time and the iOS 5.0 operating system.
The explosion was recorded by a security camera in the room showing the huge flame caused following the cell phone caught fire for no apparent reason. Fortunately, the situation did not cause a house fire to be brought under control in a few seconds without even activating the residence’s fire mechanism.
As Brian Leisgang, owner of the device, explains, the smartphone exploded around 1 am just a few minutes following the whole family had gone to sleep. The electronic was connected to the socket through the charger and, luckily, was not being used by anyone at the time of the incident.
According to Leisgang, the device’s battery has never been changed even following 12 years of use. Images show that the explosion ruptured the back cover, burning all of the device’s internal hardware components. The principle of fire may have started due to the Lithium-ion battery, a material that loses its safety following several years of use.
In some cases, it is common to see cell phones with swollen batteries, but this warning sign does not always happen, resulting directly in an explosion. This is not the first time that a smartphone catches fire, considering there are reports on models like the realme XT, Redmi Note 9, among others.
The video recorded by the cameras (watch it) was released on social networks and the case was reported to Apple, but the company has not yet taken a position on the matter. Evidently, the affected cell phone is no longer covered by the warranty.
