When Apple faced the “battery scandal” in 2017, in the final settlement agreement, Apple was required to pay a total of US$500 million (approximately HK$3.9 billion) to iPhone users. Recently, foreign media reported that each iPhone user is receiving compensation of US$92.17 (approximately HK$720).
The “battery gate incident” was first exposed in December 2017. At that time, some iOS 11 users discovered that following replacing the battery, the slowdown of the iPhone was improved. Later, the benchmarking software Geekbench investigated whether Apple artificially slowed down the iPhone through iOS updates, and found that the iPhone’s benchmark scores were getting lower and lower as it was used. For this reason, Apple admitted that it would lower the peak performance of the iPhone in order to avoid unexpected shutdowns due to battery loss and extend battery life.
Later, a group of Apple users launched a class action lawsuit in the United States, and Apple eventually had to pay a settlement of US$500 million in the settlement agreement. Apple is issuing this notice to U.S. users of iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and iPhone 6s Plus affected before December 21, 2017, as well as iPhone SE running following iOS 10.2.1, and iPhone 7 following iOS 11.2. U.S. users of Plus settle. Applications for settlement funds closed in October 2020.
According to foreign media “MacRumors”, settlement payments will begin in January 2024. The report quoted sources as saying that each case that requested settlement funds received a settlement of US$92.17.
