The newly released Accident Detection function of the new iPhone 14 and Apple Watch has been one of the most interesting news of software that brought these new devices. But it seems that it has run into a problem that Apple engineers had not anticipated: roller coasters.
Thanks to the advanced sensors carried by these devices and deep learning algorithms, the new iPhone 14 and some Apple Watch are capable of detecting when a user has suffered a car accident and issue an automatic call to the emergency services. However, as revealed by the Wall Street Journalthis system can suffer false positives when owners ride a roller coaster.
As the article explained, in recent weeks, some devices have sent notices to the Emergency service following their owners they climbed on roller coasters of several parks of attractions in the United States. In some they have even put up signs asking people to disconnect their devices or put them in airplane mode to avoid jumping the alert.
An Apple spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that its Crash Detection system is “extremely precise in the detection of serious collisions and that the company has optimized to get help from users and minimize false positives”.
It seems reasonable to think that Apple will make adjustments to its Detection system.ion of Accidents so that this failure stops occurringbut just in case, remember to turn off your mobile or put it in airplane mode the next time you go to ride a roller coaster in an amusement park.
