Some time ago, the Apple has been developing 5G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modems to gain more control over these essential components of iPhones and other devices. With this, the company also intends to reduce its dependence on other companies, such as Qualcomm it’s at Broadcom.
The current expectation is that iPhones will be able to gain the technology Wi-Fi 7 in the next generation, to be launched next year. After that, however, with the “iPhones 17 Pro”it is possible that Apple will be able to launch its own Wi-Fi 7 modem — at least that is what the analyst said today Jeff Puda Haitong International Securities.
As reflected by MacRumorsPu also said he believes that Apple will extend the adoption of the self-made component to all models in the line “iPhone 18”. If Apple actually manages to develop a Wi-Fi modem with satisfactory performance, the chip might be, in the long term, a threat to Broadcom, which currently supplies the combined Wi-Fi + Bluetooth chip for iPhones.
The information is in line with what was reflected by Mark Gurman (and Bloomberg), at the beginning of the year. At the time, it was said that Broadcom would continue to supply other components to Apple, and that the transition would occur gradually, starting with high-end devices. Pu did not say, however, whether the “iPhones 17 Pro” will have just one chip that combines Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, as also speculated.
At the beginning of the year, despite expectations regarding the development of these Apple modems, it was speculated that the company would have paused the creation of its own Wi-Fi chip. More recently, Pu himself stated that it is possible for the “iPhones 16 Pro” to gain Wi-Fi 7, although he did not mention whether the component would be from Apple itself.
Wi-Fi 7 has the ability to offer speeds of up to 40Gbps, four times more than Wi-Fi 6E. When creating a new Wi-Fi modem, Apple’s challenge is that the component has enough quality and stability to match the chips currently used, without any drops in connection speed or reliability.
As remembered by BGRin addition to the rumors regarding the Wi-Fi modem, Pu stated that the MediaTek will provide 40% of the Wi-Fi 6 chips in the entry-level iPad to be launched in 2024. This contract with Apple would make the company reach 30% of this market’s share in the second half of next year, according to him.
The analyst Ming-Chi Kuohowever, contested this speculation, in the sense that Apple’s Wi-Fi orders from MediaTek are restricted to devices with simpler specifications and that need to be connected to power to function, such as Apple TVs, with shipments scheduled for 2025 and 2026.
Spring telephoto the 48MP
Another element of the “iPhone 17 Pro” addressed by Pu in a research note was the resolution of the future device’s telephoto lens. Also according to the MacRumorsthe analyst stated that this device sensor will have a resolution of 48 megapixels.
The analyst said that the telephoto lens, in addition to having increased resolution, will be optimized for use with the Apple Vision ProMaçã’s mixed reality headset — which will be launched in early 2024. He, however, did not give further details regarding how this interaction between the iPhone and the headset would occur.
Currently, the iPhone 15 Pro has a wide-angle sensor with a resolution of 48MP, although the other two (ultra-angle and telephoto) have only 12MP. Pu himself has already said that the ultra-wide-angle camera of the “iPhones 16 Pro” will get a resolution upgrade, reaching 48MP.
If both rumors are confirmed, the top-of-the-line models to be launched in 2026 will be able to feature 48MP resolution on the three rear sensors. With so much time ahead, however, the possibility of Apple changing plans is sensitive, so we should still hear a good number of rumors until then!
