Apple is testing alternatives to increase the internal physical space of its cell phones and among them is the adoption of RCC or copper resin-coated sheets for iPhone 17 PCBs.
One of the biggest obstacles for Apple in adopting copper resin-coated foil for the iPhone 16 is durability, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at TF International Securities. The company still needs to work around its fragile properties, as this technology won’t withstand drops well, but allows the installation of more components.
This extra space can make it possible to adding larger batteries. Currently, this is only possible on premium models due to their larger screens. For the iPhone 17, Apple is said to be working with its supplier Ajinomoto to improve the RCC material before the third quarter of 2024 so that it can be used on 2025 models — there are just no confirmations whether this would be available for all models.
The RCC sheet will also make the drilling process easier. In short, the copper resin coating is fiberglass, but the absence of this material means it’s not as durable, forcing Apple and its supplier to strike a delicate balance between the two.
