If you’re looking to reduce the time you spend performing certain actions on your iPhone, there’s usually a hidden solution on iOS.

Here are 15 quick iOS tricks that, once you start using them, will save you a few precious seconds.

Please note, these tips apply to iPhones running iOS 17.

1. Quick change between numbers and letters

Rather than tapping the “123” key to switch to the numeric/symbol keypad, hold it, slide your finger to the desired key, then release.

This single action taps the number/symbol and automatically returns you to the alphabetical layout, avoiding three separate taps to achieve the same result.

2. Delete the last digit in calculator

A common misconception is that if you type the wrong number into the Calculator app, you have to start the whole calculation again. Luckily, that’s not the case: simply swipe right or left on the number display to delete the last digit typed, and repeat if necessary to delete multiple digits.

3. Assign a function to the back tap

Back Tap is an accessibility feature that lets you assign an action to trigger when you double or triple tap the back of your iPhone. You can use it to launch a specific app, invoke Control Center, turn rotation lock on/off, enable zoom, open the camera, or even trigger a shortcut.

To assign an action to a double-tap or triple-tap, go to Settings -> Accessibility, then under “Physics & Engine”, tap Touch. Scroll down and tap Back tap, tap Double tap or Triple tap to set an action to trigger, then select the action from the list you want to trigger.

4. Slide the volume

When adjusting the volume on your iPhone, why press the volume buttons multiple times when you can press once and then control the on-screen volume bar with your finger? For one, it’s quicker to turn the volume up or down. Two, it also gives you finer control to find the level you want, similar to a long press on the volume bar in Control Center.

5. Use the hidden trackpad

Did you know that the virtual keyboard has a hidden trackpad? Long press the spacebar and the keyboard will go blank to turn into a trackpad. This allows you to quickly move the cursor on the screen through the text you have written. Maybe you already knew this tip. But did you know that if you touch the trackpad with another finger, you can also select text?

6. Disable in-use rating and review requests

If you download apps often, you’re probably familiar with the “rate this app” messages that regularly interrupt your flow. Fortunately, you can easily disable them.

To do this, go to Settings -> App Store and uncheck the “Ratings & Reviews in use” box.

7. Long press on back buttons

If you’re in app submenus (e.g. Settings), you don’t need to press the back button at the top left multiple times to return to the main menu.

Just long-press it to display a pop-up of previous screens.

8. Quick Video Shooting

On iPhone 11 and later models, you can record videos without even switching to photo mode by default. To capture a quick video in the Camera app, press and hold the shutter button, then release it to stop recording.

To continue recording video without having to hold the button, slide the shutter button all the way to the right. Continue to swipe right to reveal a padlock icon. When placed on the padlock, the shutter button will stay there for as long as you record the video.

You can also press the shutter button to take a still photo while recording. When you’re ready to stop video recording, simply press the record button below the viewfinder.

9. Set a timer faster

To quickly set a timer, go to Control Center by swiping down diagonally from the upper right corner of the screen. Next, long press the timer button. Drag the slider up to set a timer duration, then tap Start.

Note that each step in the slider increases the duration of the timer in the following steps: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 45 minutes, and 1 or 2 hours. If you need a longer or more specific time, simply ask Siri to set the timer.

10. Create a Quick Call Button

If you regularly call the same people, why not create a quick call button to call them directly from your home screen? Open the Shortcuts app, tap the + button in the top right corner. Tap Add action, then select one of the suggested contacts from the Call line.

Next, tap the Share button at the bottom and select Add to Home Screen from the actions menu. Give your shortcut a name, and tap the icon to choose a photo of your contact if you have one, then tap Add to place it on your home screen.

11. Copy and Paste Photo Edits

If you have multiple photos that you want to edit in the same way, or if you’ve made changes to one photo that you want to replicate on other photos, use the new copy and paste edits tools in iOS 16.

In the Photos app, first open an image, then tap Edit and make any adjustments you want. When you’re done, tap Done, then tap the ellipsis (three dots) icon at the top-right corner of the interface.

From there, tap Copy Changes from the drop-down menu to copy all the fixes to the clipboard. Next, open another photo or select multiple photos from your library, tap the ellipsis icon again, then tap Paste Changes to get the same exact adjustments.

12. Scroll up with a tap

It’s an old trick, but one of the best and easily forgotten. Every time you’re browsing Safari or scrolling through a long menu or app flow, tap the status bar at the top of your iPhone screen to move back to the top.

If you have an iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 15 and the dynamic island is not on. In use, tapping it performs the same action.

13. Double tap for caps lock

Most people know that they can access caps by tapping the Shift key, but there’s no obvious way to enable caps lock. However, if you simply double-tap the Shift key, it will turn into a Caps Lock key. Remember this tip the next time you want to WRITE IN ALL CAPS, and you won’t need to hit the Shift key multiple times to get your point across.

14. One-tap crop

In previous versions of iOS, cropping images involved several steps: tap into the Edit interface, choose the crop tool, and adjust it with pinch gestures or by dragging the corners of the crop tool .

In iOS 17, Apple simplified the process: When you zoom in on any selected photo in your Photo Library, a new crop button automatically appears in the upper right corner of the screen.

Tapping on it brings up the full cropping interface with the zoom level you selected, allowing you to crop the part of the image you prefer, rotate the image, invert it, apply a screen ratio or use markup tools, all with just a few taps. When you’re done, just tap Done and your photo will be cropped the way you wanted.

15. Find messages faster

In iOS 17, Apple improved the search feature in Messages, now allowing you to combine search queries and filter results to quickly find the messages you’re looking for.

Previously, you could type a word or phrase into the search box in Apple’s Messages app and it would return matching results, but there was no way to filter messages. For example, if you were looking for a message from a specific friend with the word “dinner,” you would search for “dinner” and then look through everyone’s messages containing that word.

Now, however, you can combine multiple filters. If you’re looking for images or links of a certain person, for example, you can type “photos” or “link” then the person’s name, tapping to select each search filter to narrow your search results.

Thanks to these 15 tips, you will start to use your iPhone and iOS 17 in an interesting way. Indeed, the iPhone allows many more things than you think.
