When using the iPhone 15, the first thing that attracted me was its sleek matte finish design, convenient USB Type-C (USB-C) charging, and easy multi-tasking thanks to Dynamic Island. The task was a much improved camera. Some of the device’s standout features first appeared in the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro, but they felt new to people like me who upgraded from the iPhone 12. Provided by: James Martin/CNET Even now, regarding a month following I started using it, those impressions haven’t changed. The iPhone 15 got off to a somewhat rocky start, with a series of reports and social media posts that some iPhone 15 Pro models were overheating. However, there was only one time when my iPhone 15 felt noticeably hot, leading me to believe that this is not a problem common to all iPhone 15 series. Additionally, Apple has already released a software update that addresses this issue, so my overall review of the iPhone 15 remains unchanged. After using it for regarding a month, I have a better understanding of battery life, charging speed, and overall performance. I also got a chance to try out a new feature called Find Exact Location, which allows you to pinpoint your friend’s location (this feature is only available if they also have an iPhone 15 model). Battery life and charging I’ve been using the 6.1-inch standard model for almost a month, and one charge is enough for a full day’s use. I rarely reach for the charger during work, and I’ve never worried that my battery won’t last when I have following-work plans, like happy hour with co-workers. Credit: James Martin/CNET I recently attended a close friend’s wedding. That day was probably the busiest day I’ve had since switching to the iPhone 15. Hair and makeup started around 9:30 a.m., and the following-party ended around 2:30 a.m. the next day. Even though I only charged it for a few minutes before heading to the venue, the iPhone 15’s battery lasted all day. Even following hours of streaming music while preparing for a wedding reception, the battery still had power. However, it’s also worth mentioning that new smartphones usually have newer batteries, so they usually last longer. As Apple explains on its website, battery capacity decreases over time. The battery of the iPhone 15 that I am using still maintains 100% of its maximum capacity, but the battery capacity of the iPhone 12 that I purchased three years ago has decreased to 86%. In addition to sharing experiences regarding battery life, CNET’s review also conducts two types of battery tests on smartphones. A 45-minute general usage test and a 3-hour video streaming test. The purpose of the first test was to see how much battery life is consumed by everyday tasks such as scrolling through social media and video calls. The second test will show you how much stress streaming video puts on your device’s battery. The streaming test measures the remaining battery power every hour. The results of these two tests on the iPhone 15 and “iPhone 15 Plus” are as follows. iPhone 15 and 15 Plus battery lifeiPhone 15iPhone 15 Plus 45 minute test Reduced from 100% to 95% Video streaming test Reduced from 100% to 98% Video streaming test After 1 hour: 97%, After 2 hours: 91%, 3 hours After: 85% (60Hz) After 1 hour: 99% After 2 hours: 94% After 3 hours: 89% (60Hz) According to Apple, both models drain the battery in 30 minutes with a 20W adapter. It is said that it is possible to charge up to 50%. In actual testing, Apple was able to charge the iPhone 15 Plus from 20% to 67% in 30 minutes, so it seems Apple is right. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 15 went from 20% to 73% following 30 minutes of charging. This is also pretty much what Apple claims. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus support 7.5W charging when using a standard Qi wireless charger and 15W charging when using a MagSafe charger. The difference between the two types of chargers is very noticeable. When I charged my iPhone 15 Plus with a Qi wireless charger for 30 minutes, only 5% of the battery remained. However, when I used Belkin’s MagSafe wireless charging stand, I was able to get the battery back from 65% to 86%. When using the Qi wireless charger with the smaller iPhone 15, the charging speed was a little faster, going from 15% to 28% in 30 minutes. But just like the iPhone 15 Plus, charging with MagSafe was much faster, going from 28% to 50% following 30 minutes of charging. Find Your Exact Location Apple has offered the ability to share your location with other iPhone users for years, but with the iPhone 15 they’ve taken that feature even further. Newer iPhones have added a feature to Find My called Find Exact Location. This feature literally uses arrows to guide you in the exact direction of the person you’re looking for. Credit: Lisa Eadicicco/CNET However, this feature requires Apple’s new ultra-wideband chip, so both parties must own an iPhone 15 to use it. If you already own an iPhone 15 and your friends or family have recently upgraded their smartphones, you won’t be able to use this feature, which limits the number of people who can benefit from it. However, I suspect that new iPhones that will be released in the future will come with this feature as standard. In other words, the convenience may improve over time. This is Apple’s way of giving iPhone owners another reason to stay within the iOS ecosystem rather than switching to Android. I tried out this feature with my girlfriend’s husband, who is one of the few people I know who owns an iPhone 15. To test her performance, I asked her husband to hide in an aisle at a local grocery store while I waited outside. It took a while for the iPhone to find her husband’s location, but she directed me to a hidden passage within minutes. Camera, Dynamic Island, etc. In my first review of the iPhone 15, I wrote regarding the new 48-megapixel camera, Dynamic Island, USB-C, and overall performance, but following using it for regarding a month, I noticed some new things. There are several that I would like to share with you. Credit: James Martin/CNET Dynamic Islands help you multitask. I haven’t used it as often as I expected to find out the estimated arrival time of an Uber, but I do use it whenever I want to find time for exercise during my lunch break on weekdays. With Dynamic Island, you can keep Slack open on your screen and skip to the next song on your Spotify playlist without missing any important information. The move to USB-C has really improved convenience, but you may still need a Lightning charger to charge accessories like the Magic Mouse. Another cool thing I tried following publishing my first review article. All you need to do is connect your iPhone to your work monitor using a USB-C to HDMI cable. Since it’s essentially just mirroring your iPhone’s screen, it’s not as smooth an experience as Samsung’s DeX mode, nor is it as optimized as it is. I don’t think anyone would use this method instead of AirPlay, but I’ve found that it certainly works. As expected, the A16 Bionic processor is quick and snappy. The author conducted two types of benchmarks on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. Geekbench 6 measures daily performance, and 3DMark Wild Life Extreme tests graphics performance. In both tests, the iPhone 15 scored higher than the iPhone 14. 3DMark Wild Life Extreme’s overall score 3DMark Wild Life Extreme’s fps The new 48 megapixel camera is a significant upgrade compared to the cameras of older models such as the iPhone 12. In the first review article, I posted some sample photos taken with this camera, and in this article I will also include new photos so that you can actually see the improvement in image quality. The photo on the left was taken with an iPhone 15 and the photo on the right was taken with an iPhone 12. When comparing the two, the photos taken with the iPhone 15 have much better contrast and detail. Photos taken with the iPhone 15 on the left and iPhone 12 on the right. Credit: Lisa Eadicicco/CNET Overall review The iPhone 15 is a welcome upgrade for those with older models. Thanks to Dynamic Island, the standard iPhone is finally catching up to Android when it comes to multitasking. The camera feels much improved and the battery has enough capacity to last a little over a full day. The complaints I raised in the first article remain the same. I wish the standard iPhone would also have an always-on display. That’s because always-on displays are considered a standard feature on almost every other smartphone coming out in 2023. Find My’s Find Exact Location feature would also be much more useful if it became available on other iPhone models. That said, if you’re already immersed in the Apple ecosystem, looking to upgrade from an iPhone that’s more than two years old, and don’t need the bells and whistles included in the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 15 is a great overall choice.
