iPhone 15 Pro: Resident Evil 4 Remake performance under scrutiny

Resident Evil 4 Remake was released on December 20 on iPhone in a port that didn’t really impress us. The specialists of Digital Foundry were interested in the performance of the iPhone 15 Pro version through a video test, in which he compared it to the version for PS4.

Resident Evil 4 is a game that was primarily designed for the PS5/Xbox Series X generation, but which was still released on PS4 in a version that made a few compromises. Unsurprisingly, it is the one closer to the iPhone visually. The iPhone version has some advantages over the Sony console, for example by offering faster loading times. The lighting management is almost identical, and the tester notes that when it comes to general visual settings, the iPhone’s code is comparable to that of the PS4.

Several problems found on the home console are also present on the phone, for example in terms of texture loading time. They can be more disturbing on mobile, like the grain on the shadows which is more pronounced. Capcom has obviously made concessions for its iOS port with certain textures which are less defined without distorting the game too much. The tester thinks that these various compromises are linked to the very low resolution of the game, which he estimates around 300p before to be upscaled to 720p by MetalFX.

Certain elements spoil the party, like clearly visible artifacts or big drops in fps. If these only happen sporadically once every 5 to 10 minutes, they are sufficiently marked to take the player out of the experience. The port generally manages to hold the 30 fps mark, although the course is not necessarily maintained during the most eventful action scenes. In comparison, the PS4 version oscillates between 30 and 60 fps.

There is therefore progress in relation to the porting of Resident Evil : Village, which was significantly less convincing. No longer being able to modify the various graphics settings helps avoid crashes and other performance issues. The title remains playable, although with mixed performances. We are now waiting to see what will happen for Death Standing which will arrive in January. A portage ofAssassin’s Creed Mirage is also expected later in the year.
