iPhone 15 Pro Max does not have 10x optical zoom due to stabilization, says executive

In a new interview, this time the site in French NumeramaApple executives Jon McCormack (Vice President of Camera Software Engineering) and Maxime Veron (senior director of marketing for iPhone products) explained why the iPhone’s optical zoom iPhone 15 Pro Max be limited to 5x.

This is due, according to McCormack, because the 5x optical zoom of the iPhone 15 Pro Max has an “incredibly good” stabilization capacity compared to a lens with up to 10x magnification.

O zoom [óptico] 5x is something we can stabilize incredibly well. If you look at the zoom [óptico] 10x, unless you have the steadiest hands in the world or a tripod, it’s really difficult to use. We build cameras that people can use.

Another argument he presents is that the iPhone camera is “incredibly social”, so it can also “see the world expansively and up close”.

The iPhone has an incredibly social camera. With zoom [óptico] 10x, equivalent to 240mm or 250mm, people are very far away. You lose that intimacy.

Veron, in turn, added that the iPhone 15 Pro Max lens has an ƒ/2.8 aperture, allowing for “excellent light management.” Comparatively, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 10x optical zoom camera has an ƒ/4.9 aperture — so it captures much less light than the iPhone’s, which can be especially harmful for photos in dark environments.

It is worth remembering that the 5x optical zoom is only present on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, with the iPhone 15 Pro still limited to 3x optical zoom. This might change next year, with the possible expansion of the tetraprism lens for both upcoming high-end models.

They also commented on the combination of the iPhone’s software and hardware capabilities, as well as features that are expected to become references in the near future, such as spatial videos (with 3D capture).
