It seems like nothing, the Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro is ultra complete. Replacing the old silent mode button, it can open the camera, turn on the flashlight or activate a shortcut.
This is one of the main new features of the new iPhone 15 Pro, alongside the periscope lens of the camera and the USB-C port which replaced the Lightning port. For the first time since 2017 and the removal of the Home button, Apple has touched one of the four remaining buttons on the chassis of its iPhone. If the side button and the two volume buttons are unchanged, Apple has simply removed the button used to silence your phone.
Instead, Apple has opted for an Action button, identical to the one present on the Apple Watch Ultra. The principle is simple and the intention is laudable: to allow the user to take the personalization of their smartphone even further by offering them a button that they can configure as they wish.
And for good reason, the possibilities are practically endless. Switch to Silent Mode (as before), activate one of the concentration modes, open the camera to a mode, turn on the Flashlight, record a voice memo, open the magnifying glass, activate an accessibility mode, etc.
The possibilities seem, at first glance, limited. However, Apple was smart enough to integrate the shortcuts into this button. So, by pressing on it we can activate any of the shortcuts that we have created. So the only limit of this button is your imagination.
To configure this button, nothing might be simpler. Open your iPhone’s settings and scroll down slightly until you find the “Action Button” option. When you open this menu, you will come across a very nice settings page created by Apple. If you go to Camera, you can choose between settings Photo, Selfie, Video, Portrait et Selfie portrait.
When you go to Shortcut, the iPhone will ask you to choose one of the shortcuts that you have already created or offered by Apple. On Accessibility, there are several options aimed at facilitating use for a person with a disability. The possible choices are:
Classic screen color inversion Color filters Detection mode Increase contrast Reduce animations Reduce transparency Reduce white point Smart inversion VoiceOver Zoom Selection control Voice control Full keyboard access AssistiveTouch Apple Watch mirroring Control devices Nearby Background Sounds Left/Right Balance Live Captions Guided Access Live Speech
Finally, and this is the strangest use of the button, Apple suggests not assigning any action to it, making it completely useless.
