Apple finally retired its proprietary Lightning connector with the launch of the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The brand’s new cell phones now feature a USB-C port, which promises to be much more convenient and enable new features including high-resolution video mirroring.

As discovered on the specifications page, all models are capable of stream video at up to 4K @ 60 Hz to an external display with DisplayPort or HDMITherefore, the process requires a USB-C to DisplayPort cable or Apple’s HDMI connector adapter, which costs no less than R$729 in Brazil.

When connecting to an external display via a USB-C to DisplayPort cable, the Users will also have support for HDR. This option, which guarantees more contrast for the images and videos displayed on the display, is not available for HDMI connections.

Supports video mirroring and up to 4K HDR video output via native DisplayPort output over USB-C or USB-C to Digital AV adapter (model A2119; adapter sold separately).

Apple

Until the iPhone 14, the wired way to mirror your cell phone screen on an external screen was through a Lightning to HDMI or Lightning to VGA adapter. Apple’s proprietary connector was limited to Full HD (1080p) streaming. Another possibility is AirPlay, a wireless connection feature compatible with some smart TV models.

Now, the possibility of transmitting video is expanded thanks to the USB-C port which, as it is a universal standard, is more scalable and compatible with different technologies.

With the launch of the brand’s first cell phones with USB-C, users will be able to use a single cable to recharge the battery, transmit video and connect to other devices for data transfer without worrying regarding platform compatibility — be it iOS, Android , macOS or Windows.

Apple started selling a USB-C cable with support for recharging up to 60W (1 meter) for R$219, the same price charged for the old USB-C to Lightning cable. With the new accessory, users can power the iPhone 15, iPad Pro, MacBook Air and any other device compatible with the universal standard.
