Satellite SOS is back in the headlines following saving a pair of Brigham Young University students who were trapped in a canyon in the San Rafael Swell region of the United States. The students went on an expedition to discover the canyons and other geological formations in the area, but the adventure did not go according to plan.
According to information, at a certain point on the journey, tourists Bridger Woods and his partner Jeremy Mumford accidentally entered a natural pool with a high depth and filled with cold water. They stayed afloat for regarding 3 hours until the rescue team managed to find them.
The authorities received the distress call following one of the participants in the group was able to trigger the SOS feature via satellite on his iPhone 14 and send the request for help even without a carrier signal. “”I’ll be honest, I cried when I saw the helicopter there, they were saying ‘hey, we see you,'” Woods said.
This technology allowed firefighters to find victims still alive. According to Mumford, the long time in the cold water caused hypothermia – a situation where the body temperature drops below 35°C – and might be fatal if help did not come soon. “I went into hypothermic shock and started to panic and freeze,” he said.
