The system was presented for the first time during the keynote. As Apple explains, satellites are moving targets with low bandwidth. They sometimes take several minutes to send a message. Because every second counts, the iPhone starts by assessing the situation by asking you a few questions, then tells you which direction to point it to establish a connection with a satellite. Once connected, the smartphone transmits your answers, your location, your medical file (if configured) and the level of your battery to the emergency room.
