iPhone 14 Pro will get a 48 megapixel camera

A new report has confirmed previous rumors that the iPhone 14 Pro will switch to a 48-megapixel main camera. It would only be the third time that the iPhone’s main camera resolution has been increased. From the iPhone 4 on the 4S it went from 5 to 8 megapixels, from iPhone 6 on the 6s from 8 to 12 megapixels.

Apple may need the higher resolution to be able to offer 8K video recordings on its Pro models. Depending on the situation, the full resolution does not always have to be used. A portrait or landscape format image might require more megapixels, while in low light a 12 megapixel image might be saved following pixel binning.
