The front camera of the iPhone 14, more sophisticated, will be entrusted to the Japanese Sharp and, for the first time, to a South Korean subcontractor, LG Innotek.
According to ET News, LG Innotek, which already works for Apple, has recovered a contract initially awarded to a Chinese subcontractor. Which would have encountered, late, quite significant quality problems for this component.
The cost of this part of the iPhone is generally a third of that of the rear optical unit, continues the South Korean site. But for this generation it will go upmarket, to the point of being three times more expensive.
Precisely, last April, the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo evoked the reinforcement of an autofocus for the front camera and a lens with a larger aperture (ƒ/1.9 instead of ƒ/2.2). Enough to hope for an improvement in the quality of selfies in general and in lower lighting conditions in particular.
LG Innotek, which was already supplying Apple for the rear unit, would have increased its order book by adding components for the front part.
LG Innotek would share Apple’s orders equally with Sharp. It would also have internalized the manufacture of more key components instead of obtaining them from third parties (connectors, the optical stabilizer, etc). So many clues that seem to confirm a significant development for this front camera of the iPhone 14, which should take place in a hole drilled in the screen.
