iOS 17 will make third-party cameras much more responsive

While Apple’s Camera app is responsible for the vast majority of iPhone shots, there are still plenty of specialized apps, like Halide or Hydra, which delight amateurs and pros alike. With iOS 17, these third-party cameras will be able to gain speed.

Apple makes available to developers new APIs to speed up their applications in various ways. The first advance concerns the processing of snapshots. Until then, following the trigger, third-party apps had to wait for the photo to be processed before they might take another photo. However, this processing can be relatively long, because it notably includes Deep Fusion, which takes care of each pixel individually.

What’s new in iOS 17 for third-party cameras. Picture Apple.

With iOS 17, third-party cameras will be able to delay the complete processing of photos in order to bring the shots closer to the result. Only light processing will be applied to the photos at first. The complete processing will take place on demand, when you display the image in the photo library, or in the background.
