iOS 17 will display the availability of charging stations in CarPlay / Maps

Did you know that for 2 years, Apple Maps (Plans) has included a route planner? Well known to users of electric cars, a planner makes it possible to program a route in an optimized way to limit the number of stops and reduce their times according to the power of the terminals.

Still confidential, the function actually concerns only very few cars, and is still not available in Europe. In fact, this possibility of CarPlay is still unknown… and that’s a shame!

iOS 17 integrates an electric route planner

To take advantage of route planning in Maps, either:

– and Mustang Mach-E
– a Porsche Taycan

If the car is not recent, you will even have to go to the dealership to update it. Finally, an important limitation, none of these manufacturers has deployed the feature outside the USA – for some very mysterious reason…

Still, as you will soon find out over the next few days, this route planner is devilishly effective, and we would really like it to be generalized to all CarPlay-compatible vehicles. Too bad that the manufacturers do not use this possibility, probably for lack of personnel…

iOS 17 will display the availability of charging stations

As we will see together, this planner is still quite basic on the side of Apple – which probably only has one part-time developer on CarPlay 🙂

It therefore still lacks a whole bunch of functions that we find in Tesla, BMW and the others. For example, it is not possible to see the availability of the terminals presented, which can have a significant impact on the duration of journeys.

With iOS 17, Apple should finally offer to see if a terminal is occupied and the number of stalls available. Tesla has been doing this for years, which avoids a few overcrowded stations, and optimizes its route accordingly.

Except that… the feature still hasn’t appeared in CarPlay, and we’ve already gone through a few betas. It’s even likely that it won’t happen by September, as Apple has become accustomed to presenting features that will not finally be put into production until version X.5, i.e. 6 months after the first GM version. .

Ford, Porsche… what are you waiting for to offer the function in Europe? And why does the Volkswagen group (of which Porsche is a part) not deploy the thing on all of its brands? Clearly, the pace of the industry is struggling to keep up with that of Silicon Valley…
