iOS 17: these features that will only be reserved for certain models

Presented at WWDC on June 5, iOS 17 clearly has something to dream regarding. Live Voicemail, NameDrop or “Siri” are all major new features, but they won’t be available to everyone from launch.

Live Voicemail sur iPhone

Announced as one of the key features of the future update, Live Voicemail is a real novelty that will clearly revolutionize the way we call our relatives, colleagues and friends. When someone calls you and you are unable to answer, they will be sent to voicemail. Live, the message he will be leaving will be displayed on your screen, and you can then pick up if it is an emergency.

It’s dreamy isn’t it? And yet, French-speaking iPhone users will simply not be entitled to it, since the function only works with English and therefore in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or even Australia. Unless your correspondent speaks English, it is therefore impossible to have Live Voicemail in Belgium or France.

NameDrop sur Apple Watch

This is a more incidental function, but which can be very practical when you want to quickly exchange contact information with another Apple user. By approaching his iPhone to that of someone else, we can send him private phone, private address or email address. And the advantage is that the function is compatible between iPhone, but also between an iPhone and an Apple Watch.

Well, that’s almost it, since not every Apple Watch will be able to run the feature. If your Watch is to run on watchOS 10, it shouldn’t be too old either. So only Apple Watch Series 6 or newer, Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch SE will have access to the feature.

“Siri” instead of “This, Siri”

If “Say, Siri” was rather practical to say to challenge the personal assistant of Apple, the firm must obviously think that it was not intuitive, since it decided to replace the sentence with a simple “Siri”. This can be confusing, since the assistant may wake up when it is mentioned during a conversation.

Rest assured (or not, it depends), this function is also only available in English-speaking countries: United Kingdom, Canada, United States… In addition, only AirPods equipped with the H2 chip will be able to do it. go.

Consecutive requests to Siri

Again, Siri will make people jealous. Once activated, it can be asked several questions without having to reactivate it or call it once more. And yet, you will have to live in an English-speaking country or be perfectly bilingual to be able to take advantage of it. In addition, only iPhone 11 or newer benefit from it.

FaceTime on Apple TV+

This should greatly change the way we use FaceTime. By holding your iPhone above your TV and initiating a FaceTime call, you can use your phone’s camera to film yourself and Apple TV to show your caller. Not everyone is in the same boat, however, since tvOS 17 will need to be installed on an Apple TV 4K that is at least second generation.

The adaptive audio of AirPods

Other brands already offered it, including Sony, but not yet Apple. It is now done, with the AirPods which are finally able to adapt the listening mode according to your environment. Noise reduction when you are in a noisy environment, transparency when someone is talking to you or normal in your daily life, some AirPods will be able to quickly switch between one mode and the other.

Yes, you read that right, only “certain” AirPods Pro will be able to benefit from adaptive audio, namely those equipped with an H2 chip. So these are the second generation AirPods Pro.

Ultra-fast AirPods swapping

With iOS 17, Apple has significantly improved the function of switching between devices when wearing AirPods. If you watch a video on your iPhone with your headphones on and then switch to your MacBook, the AirPods will be able to quickly switch between devices. The function already existed before, but it has been considerably accelerated.

To enjoy it, only iPhone XS, XR or newer are required, as well as AirPods (2nd or 3rd generation), AirPods Pro and AirPods Max running the latest OS. First generation AirPods and iPhone SE are not compatible.

Mute or mute AirPods during a call

When you’re on a call with AirPods, iOS 17 will allow you to mute for a moment by pressing the stem of your AirPods. As these need a pressure sensor, only the first or second generation AirPods will not be able to take advantage of it.

History in House

Who came following you and locked the front door? Who came home during the day and turned up the thermostat to turn on the heat? So many questions regarding everyday situations that iOS 17 will finally be able to answer. With the activity history in Home, you will be able to see all the interactions with your home connected objects. This will include garage doors, security systems and even contact sensors.

But to benefit from it, you will have to update your connected home to Apple’s new infrastructure, which will be offered to you when you start Home for the first time following the iOS 17 update.
