iOS 17: Siri will use AirPods to give information with locked iPhone

Although it can be considered limited in comparison to other virtual assistants, the Siri it is extremely useful for people who have special needs and/or disabilities. Near to Voice Controlit’s an essential feature for those who have trouble interacting with iPhone and other devices using their hands and fingers.

However, as shown by a report sent to 9to5Mac, there is a major hurdle in using Siri/Voice Control. Basically, the problem occurs when the device is locked and the user asks the assistant to read notifications or appointments on the calendar, for example. In this case, Siri responds by stating that the iPhone needs to be unlocked for the command to be executed.

It is true that it is possible to unlock the iPhone by dictating the password through Voice Control, although doing so in a public environment is not very safe. Thus, people who depend on accessibility resources end up being helpless when their devices are locked, needing to ask someone to unlock them, for example.

With iOS 17, however, a new authentication system will be implemented: if your iPhone is jailbroken and you are using AirPods, the device remains authenticated as long as the headphones are connected and in range. That way, even if the device is locked, it will still be possible to ask Siri to read notifications and the like.

This solution, of course, is still far from ideal, as it requires the user to have a pair of AirPods, but it is already a huge step forward. As a workaround, the person who submitted the report to the 9to5Mac recalled that it would be interesting for the assistant to incorporate, on the iPhone, the voice recognition feature available on the HomePod. Thus, the system would be able to authenticate the user without any additional hardware.

Also, another iOS 17 feature that will be great for people who rely on Siri to use their iPhone is the multiple requests, only compatible with the English language until then. With it, it is possible, for example, to ask to read the notifications, to repeat and, soon following, to reply, if it is a message or something that needs a response. You can also place a new order while the assistant is talking, something that makes use more agile.

Also highlighted was the assistant’s ability to differentiate between times when the user is talking to another person and when dictating a command to Siri. Along with the multiple requests feature, the function is something that makes it much easier to use and understand what is being requested, especially when asking for notifications to be announced.

The report showed that Apple’s commitment to accessibility is real and is indeed making a difference in people’s lives. Siri itself, although it is often mocked for not understanding certain requests, has also proven to be quite useful in several cases and it is great to know them, as in this situation.
